Astier de Villatte, creative fragrances at work

Astier de Villattein recently expanded the "tableware or art of entertaining" section by an assortment of moisturizing hand lotions, soaps and other very special eaux de cologne, enriching the potpourri of fragrances in leading Parisian boutiques, Astier de Villatte has indeed stepped on the gas pedal when it comes to diversifying the product line. Result: a trip around the world in-12-candles.

Cambridge, Honolulu, Namche Bazar, Hong Kong before reaching Naples and Mantes La Jolie, all in one hour! Impossible ? If you think this is the rip-off act of the century concocted by your tour operator in cahoots with magician David Copperfield, then you have another thing coming to you. This is Astier de Villatte’s new creation. Leaving aside furniture and dishware, it is proudly playing the olfactory travel agency of the year. Secret ingredients include almond tree blossom of Delphes, cedar patchouli of Saint Victor street, sensual roses of Cambridge, as well as wet earth touches of Saint-Cirq Lapopie, the five continents can be crossed at will with twelve vegetable wax candles ingeniously moulded in a Tuscany blown glass. A new craftsmanship is born.

History in the making

There is something in the wind along the lines of a saga at the House of Astier de Villatte. Since their first stand at the Maison et Objet fair in 1996, very much like a chaotic rummage sale running between the Porte de Vanves, Emmaüs and city sidewalks - the exhibition of anthology if there is even such a thing - and the opening of their very first Boutique at Rue Saint-Honoré in 2000, our French-Roman designers have come a long way. In 2007 they launched, more for a joke, a perfumed liquid detergent. The gadget was a hit and has been making a splash ever since. No more was needed to push the joke even further. The meeting with Françoise Caron (the “nose” of Acqua di Gio, Eau d'Orange verte of Hermès and also ça sent Beau of Kenzo) was the impetus. A range of Eaux de Cologne, soaps, hand moisturizing lotions and candles came out one after the other, the proof that with a good dose of humour, savoir-faire and creativity, you can turn around even the most gloomy-looking situation.
