Volvo XC 60 : the beautiful Swedish lady takes her inspiration from big brother XC 90.

Volvo has earned the reputation, already for some time now, of being uncompromising when it comes to safety, and the new Volvo XC 60 is no exception to the rule. This crossover of cities with fluid lines has in fact, a number of special driving aids and above all, it is the first to offer the fine-tuned« City Safety » which is fitted as standard. Positioned at the top of the range with elegant and racy line, careful finishing and an undeniable security feature, this compact SUV has all the key features to attract a large following.

The « City Safety » fitted as standard in all cars.

XC 60 distinguishes itself and stands out from its competitors, above all its German competitors, being the first car in the world to offer an automatic breaking system fitted as standard to cover the possibility of a driver failing to react when the risk of a collision is imminent. Located on the windscreen, at the level of the interior rear-view mirror, a control unit that comes with a laser, sensors and electronic equipment performs distance and speed calculations. Without going into details, this « City Safety » system is capable of autonomously bringing the XC 60 to a brake before a potential accident. Of course, this all depends on the motor vehicle’s speed, at a speed of less than 15 km/h, a crash can be avoided, at speed ranging from 15 to 30 km/h, the car runs into the vehicle in front, but the consequences of the collision are much milder owing to the substantial speed reduction. Urban driving thus becomes easier, a real relief for easily distracted drivers !
But that’s not all. As usual Volvo also offers other safety features, as options, such as the « Advanced Safety Pack » which consists of a dead angle monitoring system, a crash warning device for more than 30 km/h with automatic breaking, a speed regulator with a radar that ensures a stable security distance is kept and a lane departure warning system. It takes a bit of getting used to these accessories which, then prove to be very useful, and are a far cry from gadgets.

A very successful presentation.

With its tilted windscreen and its vanishing roof design, the XC 60 also has an attractive body, adopting the lines of an estate car and a four-wheel drive.
Its large outdoor wind mirrors are very practical with the dead angle monitoring system that we get used to very quickly, to the point of sometimes forgetting the interior rear-view mirror, and moreover are perfectly integrated with the general car design. The headlights, very much stretched frontward and backwards, and its majestic radiatorgrill give it the dynamic look of a sporty estate car with the additional unique feature of a crossover.
In the interior of the car, with the now famous centrally floating console, we get the impression that we are piloting an airplane and the passenger compartment proves to be very comfortable for the driver as well as passengers. It provides generous rear capacity and the trunk with a capacity of 495litres enables you to travel comfortably with your little family and pack in their all luggage and other incidentals.
The panoramic sunroof (another option) lights up the passenger compartment and enhances the leather that comes in contrasting colours as well as the dashboard instruments circled by chromium or brushed aluminium.
In sum, all you need to have a beautiful and good trip.

And soon a « 2 Wheel Drive » XC 60.

Concerned about entering into the niche of the systematic reduction of CO2 emissions of the traditional engine types of the company, the Volvo’s Research and Development Department will launch a new version of the XC 60 on the market for summer 2009, equipped with a 2.4 litre turbo-diesel and front-wheel transmission.
This 2.4 l front wheel drive will develop 175 HP. In compliance with Euro 5 standards, it emits less than 170 g/km of CO2 for a consumption of 6.4 l/100 km equipped with a mechanical gearbox.
As the R & D Department makes a point of adding, « The next step will be the emergence of a micro-hybrid version with a potential emission threshold reduced to about 140 g/km ».
Designed for demanding car drivers under all different traffic conditions (urban roads, country routes and motorways), the XC 60 guarantees driving serenely and in complete pleasure. No wonder, a very large number of fans are attracted to this type of car.
