Christian Lacroix at the Museum of Decorative Arts: A history of Fashion
By celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Christian Lacroix House with the very first monographic exhibition of the designer, the Museum of Decorative Arts of Paris has gone beyond a simple anniversary. It indeed offers a complex and ambitious representation of the history of Fashion from the 18th century until now.
One cannot always be 20!
The year 2006 saw Christian Dior celebrate the 60th anniversary of his famous House. The year 2007 will be celebrating another Christian: Christian Lacroix ! The later has not only been present on the Haute Couture stage for 20 years with his baroque and coloured creations, but he has also been at the origin of many unlikely projects: from theatre and opera costumes to the make-over of the TGVs and the uniforms of Air France's air hostesses, from hotel interior design to a Winter collection for La Redoute, not to mention the special defile for his 20th anniversary, Lacroix has had many things on the go. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs have decided to pay homage to the brilliant career of the Frenchman by organising an exhibition, drawing the parallels between the history of fashion and the history of the designer, told by Christian Lacroix himself.
A child's dream
Some children dream of becoming a vet or a fireman, others want to be a curator. Study the world, revisiting history, what a great mission! Christian Lacroix took his role very seriously. Every week and for many months, the methodical, self-demanding and scrupulous designer immerged himself into the fashion and textile collections of the Museum to select the 400 pieces of fashion heritage to be exhibited along with his own creations. It works like an echo-exhibition where both worlds are staged perfectly thanks to a subtle lighting that aims at creating a dialogue between the history of fashion and the designer's most prominent creations. Checks, stripes, tweed, quilt, spider web....The themes and techniques jostle together, inventing new silhouettes and create a refreshing tale of fashion through the ages.
