Trou aux Biches: the 5 star eco-friendly resort on Mauritius
After two years of work and 74 million Euros of investment by Beachcomber Hotels, the 5-star Trou-aux-Biches Resort & Spa has reopened its doors last winter and is more appealing than ever. This address combines luxury and authenticity with 5 star service and all this in a very eco-friendly way. Let’s visit this paradise in the Indian Ocean.

Luxury authenticity

Everybody who has had the chance to discover this new generation resort confirms that all efforts have been made to retain the characteristics that have given the Trou-aux-Biches its reputation: charm, authenticity on probably the most exceptional location on the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. The architect Giraud has managed to integrate a ”tropical" imprint, flirting with contemporary lines and integrating the latest technical details in an intelligent blend of decor.

Contemporary decoration and spacious suites

Here, on the north-west side of the island, facing the sunset and on one of the most beautiful sites of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, the resort features, in a  tropical and chic ambiance, 333 accommodations, including lavish chalet-style Suites built in crescents while private villas are tucked among the lush tropical gardens. With an emphasis on environmental preservation Trou aux Biches is the first eco-friendly resort in Mauritius, while providing the latest in luxury, focusing on privacy, space and diversity. All Villas, Beach Front Suites and Senior Beach Front Suites have private pools. Other Suite categories open onto larger pools, centred at the heart of each crescent. Other facilities in the resort include six restaurants, a brand new spa by Clarins, a mini-club for children, a teens club as well as a range of free land and water sports and a state of the art sports club. In short, a new dimension of sublime luxury, yet being eco-friendly at the same time.

Our favourites ...

Gourmets, don’t worry. It’s no use doing up the whole resort without re-thinking its culinary aspects, the Trou aux Biches has six restaurants: Blue Ginger, L’Oasis, Mahiya, La Caravelle, Le Deck and Il Corallo, offering a world of flavours sourced from the far end of Asia to the shores of the Mediterranean sea. Some of the restaurants are tucked away in the tropical garden, others are overlooking the beach and the lagoon, all restaurants have their own personal culinary identity, a contemporary decoration and a menu to satisfy any wish.

Spa by Clarins

Another novelty , the tropical spa by Clarins, one of the most spacious spas on Mautitius with its 2897 m2 ! We like the cabins that are kept in a chic minimalist style or the thatch-roofed cabins where you can commune with nature and enjoy a massage to the sound of bird calls and a gentle breeze to cool you off. The extensive pampering menu features massages, scrubs, and all kinds of treatment heralding pure relaxation and indulgence. The spa also features one balneotherapy room, one algotherapy room, two hammams and two saunas.

First Mauritian Eco-friendly resort

It’s a trend that fortunately the newly built high end luxury complexes subscribe to, and it goes without saying that the Trou-Aux-Biches took this engagement towards out planet serious, so that environmentally caring tourists can relax with a clear conscience. The key to eco-friendliness? Collecting and recycling of rain water, solar panels, preservation of 97% of the trees that were on the terrain of the former hotel, a complex for desalination and waste water treatment is under construction, waste sorting with “green waste” selection. Last but not least: the hotel is committed to contribute to the social development of the region. A post office, infirmary and shopping centre will soon see the day and create 500 new jobs which brings the total number of employees for this single hotel to 950 persons. Service guaranteed! In full osmosis with nature, the Trou aux biches managed to combine luxury, relaxation and eco-friendliness. Bravo!

Novembre 2011

My opinion:
Ranked amongst the best of  Mauritius, this resort is worth a stay. Eevrybody will feel at home here: couples, families, sports fans. There is something for everyone: tennis courts, fitness centre with several rooms, one for cardio-training, one for muscle training and the last one for biking. The spa is spacious and very comfortable with professional therapists. We like the thatch-roofed cabins for open air massages. For families the villas are an ideal holiday option. If your are a couple, I suggest the senior suite with ocean view and small private pool. Thumbs up for the latest technologies in the suites, including the adaptor box! To get there, book a direct flight with Air Mauritius (11 hours from Paris)

Olivier Barrot
