The first European underwater restaurant

Following the Maldives success, a new underwater restaurant will be opened soon in the country of the fiords, thanks to snøhetta design studio. Of course, this is not for claustrophobic...

Dining underwater

Not far away from Båly village located in the southernmost part of the Norway coast, snøhetta architecture studio is about to open the very first European underwater restaurant. The studio is famous for its risky projects, including the Norway National Opera and Ballet as well as the Lascaux International Cave Art Center. More than a simple panoramic underwater restaurant, the place will also welcome a research center on marine habitats and life.

In an impressive desert landscape, between cliffs and heaps of stone, the restaurant is semi submerged in the water. We love its architecture, both really modern and perfectly integrated within the surrounding environment. The underwater part is nested in some concrete shell, used as a support for seashells and, it's also an artificial reef that can purify the sea water to attract even more marine species. Fishes and shellfishes that can be observed from the great panoramic window while dining.

Before joining your round table or great guest table made of oak wood and facing the marine flora and wildlife, you have to go down three levels. The first one is dedicated to welcoming and dressing room, the second one welcomes a Champagne bar and the third one is dedicated to the restaurant, decorated in dark blue and green tones, paying tribute to the seabed, seaweed and heavy swells of a rough sea. Finally, the restaurant can be heated or air-conditioned, depending on the sea's temperature, thanks to a cutting-edge heat pump.
