The Pinakothek in Munich decided to pay a tribute to women by exhibiting 95 paintings from the masters of the early 20th century, Pablo Picasso, Max Beckmann and Willem de Kooning.

Timeless muses

Since our origins, women have been an unfailing source of inspiration for artists, and their complex personalities leave a broad space for interpretation. They appear in a considerably differentiated and radical manner throughout the work of Picasso, Beckmann and de Kooning. Picasso and Beckmann looked at the personality of the woman, trying to picture her biography and tell her story while at the same time representing the projection of male fantasies, whereas Women V by de Kooning is more focussed on the expression of artistic possibilities, often not very flattering for women. The role that they attribute to women in their art goes far beyond the one-dimensional definitions and clichés of femininity and this exhibition states it perfectly, avoiding the traps of popular conceptions.
